UTE is a Official Web Site of an American Indian people now living primarily in Utah and Colorado (Ute means “land of the sun” ). The Uintah and Ouray reservation is located in Northeastern Utah (Fort Duchesne) approximately 150 miles east of Salt Lake City on US Highway 40. The reservation is located within a three-county area known as the “Uintah Basin”. It is the second largest Indian Reservation in the United States that covers over 4.5 million acres. The reservation is home to the Sky Ute Casino and Resort, SunUte Community Center and Museum.
The Utes have a tribal membership of 3,157 and over half of its membership lives on the Reservation. They operate their own tribal government and oversee approximately 1.3 million acres of trust land.
In UTE, There are three Ute tribal reservations:
- Uintah-Ouray in northeastern Utah (3,500 members)
- Southern Ute in Colorado (1,500 members)
- Ute Mountain which primarily lies in Colorado
But Extends to Utah and New Mexico (2,000 members).
